I would like to thank all parents who came to the October 22 & 23 parent/teacher interviews and for those parents who would like to talk with me please contact me and we can make arrangements that will work for you.

Permission Slips and Time-Sensitive Mail
Occasionally, parents will receive permission slips and other important information that requires immediate attention. Please return these forms as soon as possible. Thank you Parents.
  This week we have two field trips on October 28th the YPC and Oct. 31 the Seniors' Center...please get the two permission forms in by Monday!

In Class this Week...

☼    Students will continue to learn a wide variety of routines including morning arrival, Eat when you’re hungry, snack/lunch time, hallway behaviours, Daily 5,free time, and closing time.  Everyone is doing a great job!

☼    Reading: We are focusing on “th” and “sh.” We have started Read to Self as the first part of our Daily 5 program.

☼    Writing: We are working on making complete sentences. We are also learning how to pick a good topic.

☼    In math, we are working with number concepts.

☼
Home Reading is coming home this week. Please read
more about it below.

Indoor Shoes

       Daily Physical Activity is an important part of the Grade 1
program. Each student must have a pair of non-marking running shoes, which they are able to fasten independently.  These shoes will stay at school throughout the year.

 Outdoor Shoes

Your child will be wearing the shoes he/she wears to school whenever we go outside (including recess and lunch time). It is essential that your child can fasten these shoes independently as well. Also, flip flops are discouraged because children are unable to play, run and climb safely while wearing this type of shoe.

Home Reading

Home Reading Program will begin this week. A new book will come home every Monday-Thursday. If your child can read the book independently the first time, put a STAR beside that book on the Home Reading Log sheet. After 5 stars, I will read with your child and see if he/she is ready to change levels. Please do not panic if your child is starting at a way easier level. It will not take long for your child to jump up. There are new sight words this week (me, went, we, day, play).

Library Books

Library books/bags must be returned to our class’ blue box (just inside our class door) by Monday.  TUESDAY will now be our library day. If your child is done with his/her books early, please return them at that time. Let’s work hard to prevent overdue books this year.

Physical Education

Our class will have P.E. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.  Please encourage your child to wear comfortable clothing on these days.

A reminder for Recess and Lunch

At Haldane, students are expected to go outside for recess and lunch, regardless of weather conditions (except for the coldest days in winter). Please ensure that your child has appropriate outdoor footwear and outerwear for the day’s forecasted weather.

Eat When You Are Hungry

 I implemented "Eat when you are Hungry" in our classroom. That means that your child has the opportunity to graze throughout the day as long as he/she follows some basic rules:

* no eating at carpet

* no eating at computers

* don't eat messy foods when you are doing work (ie. no spaghetti while doing math work)

 * clean up after yourself

*we have no microwave so don't bring lunches that need to be heated.
*
You may want to discuss with your son/daughter what kinds of things he would like in his lunch and monitor how much food your child is eating. You may find that your child will start eating more during the day. This will only work if students bring lots of healthy foods to school, so please try to limit the amount of sugary foods you pack.

Birthdays

In class we have a low-key birthday “treatment”. We sing “Happy Birthday” and he/she gets special privileges for a whole week. If you would like to send a treat for the whole class to share (i.e. cupcakes), we have no allergies this year. For the many summer birthdays, we will have a scheduled “Unbirthday” sometime this year.

  Toys/electronics

Toys/electronics are not welcome at school because they can be lost, broken and/or stolen.

Safe Arrival

If your child is absent from school (or will be very late), please call Safe Arrival in the morning. The Safe Arrival team is very busy calling all unknown absences in the morning, and they would greatly appreciate your phone call. Thank you.

Lates

If your child enters the classroom after the 8:30 bell, he/she is late. Please ensure that your child signs in at the office when you arrive late. Thanks.

Water Bottles

Students are encouraged to have a water bottle on their desk in my class. Please make sure that the bottle closes tightly as to avoid spills, and please write your child’s name on the bottle. Bottles will be sent home to be cleaned over the weekend.

Well we are more then half ways through this month...this week we have field trips for the Salmon Run (Monday), and the Pumpkin patch (Tuesday).  I am looking forward to the parent/teacher interviews on Wednesday and Thursday and of course those days are half days for the students....early dismissal at 12:30.  On Friday there is no school because of a Pro-d day.  There will be no new sight words this week so continue practicing the words that have been handed out.  I would like to start Home Reading this week...students will begin bringing home reading books to read with their parent/guardians.  Return the home reading bags with the book and then students can exchange the book...there are instructions to the home reading so please take the time to read the information.  I will be writing the parent/teacher interview time in the student's agenda so please look for it on the Tuesday. I would like to see every parent so please book a time and return the time sheet as soon as possible.  If the times and days don't work for you please email me or phone me at the school so we can arrange a time.
I would like to thank those parents who are coming to the field trips...it is nice to see the extra help!

This week:
Monday, October 20- Salmon Run Field trip
Tuesday, October 21-Pumpkin Patch Field Trip
Wednesday, October 22-Gym Day & Parent/teacher interviews

We have an exciting week ahead. Tuesday there will be new sight words introduced to students.
     Reminder that Wednesday and Thursday next week will be Early Dismissal days for Parent-Teacher Interviews (please pick up your child at 12:30pm). The format for these days will be the following: I will post a sign up sheet in the classroom for times available.       Interviews will be kept short (unless there is no one waiting)  5-7 minutes. I will be available on these two days from 1:30-3:30. I look forward to meeting with all of you during this time. If you are unable to come during those times, please email or phone me to set up a time that works for you.  There are new Sight Words(5 words) in your child's sight word folder which should be in their agenda books please follow the instructions and have your child print out the words.  Please let me know if your child does not have the words.      I still need more parent drivers for the Pumpkin Patch field trip, currently we only have enough drivers to take 7 students...PLEASE  phone me and let me know if you can help out otherwise this field trip may have to be cancelled!  I also have a few students who have not returned their permission slips...please get those in as quickly as possible.
There will a permission slip handed out on Tuesday this week...the Salmon Run field trip is on October 20th...these have to be returned by Thursday October 16th!
