I am surprised how quickly time passes...we are going to be together for two months at the end of next week!  We will be carving out pumpkins on Tuesday so I have asked the students to bring in carving tools on Monday (if you can volunteer please come on out on Tuesday...we will start after P.E. 11;15ish).  We do not get to keep the pumpkins.  They go to Gardengate for public display and then will be returned if they are still in good shape.

This week for L.A. we are doing our usual 3 (Spelling unit, Comm Skills, Write Traits) as well as a couple of Halloween writing activities.  We are also working on our musical instrument project.  In Math, last week we had our quiz for patterns and sequences and we will be continuing with place value.  For HACE we should be nearing the end of healthy foods, and moving on to good work habits in school transfers outside of the school area.    In Science we have wrapped up Habitats and Communities (a grade 4 unit) .  It is all about the volleyball in P.E. for the next little while.  Drills and skills before finishing up with games....

Let's take a look at this week:

Monday, Oct. 22 - P.E & Library Social Studies with Mrs. Gorman
Tuesday, Oct. 23 - Pumpkin Carving & P.E. and Library exchange
Wednesday, Oct. 24 - French & Library Social Studies with Mrs. Gorman
Thursday, Oct. 25 - Musical project in Computer room.
Friday, Oct. 26 - French

Well it is hard to believe that we are almost half way through October!
Dates to remember:
*INSERVICE: Friday, October 19th (no school for students)
*INTERMEDIATE DANCE: Wednesday October 31st, 1:00-2:30. Admission: $2.00 + a food bank donation.

LANGUAGE ARTS
In writing students are learning to 'toss out' details that are unimportant or unnecessary.  Students are using the dictionary to search out words, and they are able to identify proper/common nouns and using capitals when necessary,

MATH
This week the students will have a short quiz on patterns...students have been working on patterns for the last three weeks....I am thinking that they should have no difficulties with this quiz!  Also, this week we will begin to use base ten blocks to learn about place value and how to represent numbers in expanded form.

Social Studies
We will be having a short quiz on mapping & continents.
We are going to begin a Social Studies project in the library with Mrs. Gorman.  Students will have to go through different stations to learn about Aboriginal history.

Science
We are continuing with the human body with grade 5's and grade 4's will continue with habitats and communities.  There will be a short quiz for both grades on their subjects.
This week;
Monday, Oct. 15-P.E.  Library with Mrs. Gorman
Tuesday, Oct. 16-P.E. & Library exchange
Wednesday, Oct. 17-Quizzes Math/Science & Library with Mrs. Gorman

 A date to remember...
I am currently arranging for our class to take part in the PUMPKINS of LIGHT event at Gardengate. My guess is we'll be carving pumpkins the week before Halloween...stay tuned...as time gets closer I will have an exact date.  I'll need a few parent helpers!  Watch for the sign-up sheet outside my door once everything is confirmed.
This Week:
Language Arts;
In Communication Skills we will practice alphabetizing words in order to become proficient with a dictionary.
In Writing we are learning to prepare strong 'leads' to hold the interest of our readers.

MATH
We will begin place value.  Students will be: writing numbers, and representing them with base ten materials.

Social Studies:
We will complete our short mapping unit with a test.  Students will need to know: continents, oceans, hemispheres, latitude, longitude, and the meaning of 'scale'.
I would like to remind parents that students need proper running shoes and shorts for gym class.

This week:
October 9,Tuesday-P.E. & Library exchange.
Oct. 10, Wednesday- French with Ms. Brokvich
Oct. 11, Thursday-Computers (finishing good copy of writing)
Oct. 12, Friday- French with Ms. Brokvich

Let's have a great week!
If you need to contact me please email me or phone the school.
