Please make sure your Isobel lake permission slip form has been turned in. We have to make sure we have enough parent volunteers for this field trip. This Friday is a day off for students. The teachers are involved in Professional Development. Monday is Victoria Day (hopefully a day of for everyone). For students....a 4 day weekend. In Math we are carrying on with Jumpmath, for L.A. we are working on our novel unit. In Science we are continuing with plants this week and moving on to Health and Career unit on safety and Injury prevention (check your email for the information on this unit) Social Studies projects on symbols of Canada will be finished this week and coming home. In P.E. we are continuing with soccer unit. This week there are special events taking place on Tuesday and Thursday. On Tuesday, we will have the opportunity to see a Vancouver band play in our gym. On Thursday in the library we will have a special guest author Jan Andrews. We are beginning new sight words and continuing home reading. Social Studies unit symbols of Canada will continue as well as the Science plant unit. The class were able to see the eggs in the incubator in Mrs. Sarrasin's classroom last week and they will have another chance to see if any of the eggs have hatched this week. In gym, we will begin playing outdoors so please make sure your child has proper footwear. It is hard to believe that May is here already! We have new sight words this week and report cards are going home tomorrow (Monday). Please sign the report card envelope and return it to school as soon as possible. Thanks. In Social Studies we will continue with projects concerning symbols of Canada. In math last week we worked on symmetry and building up our math skills for addition and subtraction. In gym, we will begin a soccer unit so please ensure your child has running shoes. Important Information about Year-end Field Trips Our full day field trip to the Wildlife Park has been cancelled, however our Isobel Lake field trip (June 13th) is confirmed. The Isobel Lake field trip can only be successful if we have many parent volunteers. Please consider joining us for an adventurous day hiking and exploring. Hello Everyone This week our class will be going to the last Young People concert on April 26th. We are continuing with symbols of Canada in Social Studies and in Science students will continue with plant unit. New sight words and home reading will begin this week. Please ensure that your child is exchanging their books everyday. As the weather gets warmer we will be doing gym classes outside, so please make sure your child has running shoes on the gym days. Monday is a professional development day so there will be no school. This week will be another busy week for our class. We continue with symbols of Canada and work on our "novel study" unit. New sight words will begin on Tuesday as well as home reading. In Science, students are learning about plants and a new butterfly unit will begin with Mrs. Gorman in the library. I would like parents to make sure your child has enough food in their lunch because as the days get warmer children become more active. I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter weekend with your family! The field trip to the Big Little Science Center last week was great! A big thank you to our drivers for the field trip! Students were very excited to be at the science center and it was nice to see their reactions to some of the experiments. This week will see our class continue with new sight words as well as home reading. In Math we will continue to work out of the jumpmath program and in Social Studies we will learn more about symbols of Canada. In Science, we have just completed a unit on Frogs with Mrs. Gorman. In class we will begin studying about plants. We started our "novel study" last week and will continue this week...time is flying by and we have so much to do! In the school, you will see student-teachers please make them feel part of our community and say hi to them. They will be doing their short practicum in our school. Please check the Show and Tell schedule for your child's VIP day. Please return all library books that are overdue on Wednesday. This week will be another busy week for students as we roll into April. Students are continuing to expand their vocabulary with new words and we are now developing a "dictionary" that students can add words to...this will be a great resource for developing sentences. In Social Studies, students learned what "rights" they have as students, and the many types of jobs around the school. We will begin a new unit on Canada and Canadian symbols this week. In Math, students will continue with addition and subtraction concepts, and we are beginning to work on "half & quarter" fraction concept. In Science we are continuing to work on our plant unit. We do have a field trip to Big Little Science Center on April 4th to conclude our Force and Motion unit...I have sent out an email in regards to who is driving students to BLSC...so please check your emails. In Language Arts students are beginning a "novel study" which will see them expanding their outlook on stories. Should be exciting! I hope you had a wonderful Spring Break. I was thankful for some spring-like weather after our snowy start. I am energized and ready for a busy third term in Grade 1. In Class this Week... Please continue to review the sight words that students have in their folders. There are new sight words this week: try, friend, how next, made. Please continue to practice the words that we have already learned EVERYDAY. In math, we are working on counting on and counting back. We will continue with vertical addition and we are starting "money" unit as well as continuing with practicing with "time". We will be starting a new unit about Canadian symbols in social studies. We do have a Gymnastic session on March 28th so please ensure that your child has clothing with no zippers and no jeans. Library Library books are due on Wednesday every week. After school If you arrive to the school late to pick up your child, he/she will be at the office. Early Dismissal Day This Friday is an early dismissal day. Class will be dismissed at 12:30. If you would like to arrange an interview with me for Friday afternoon (or some other time), please email me and we can set something up. This week will see our class continue with Home Reading as well as introduction of new sight words. In Math, we will continue working in our Jumpmath work books. We do have a Gymnastic field trip planned for Wednesday...I sent out an email so please check your emails for details (I will also sent out a notice on Monday). Drivers are listed in the email so please check and make sure you are still able to help out. All students need booster seats so bring them in Wednesday morning. Last week our class participated in Read Around The Planet and students did a wonderful presentation. I was very proud of their performance! We are going into the last week of February and it's hard to believe that spring will soon be here. I still need more drivers for the Big Little Science Center (March 6)...if you are interested in volunteering for this field trip please come and see me. You will need to fill out a volunteer form for driving students on field trips (Please come and see me for the forms). I still have a few students who have not handed in permission slips...please get them in soon. We are continuing with the Force and Motion unit (Science). In Math we are still working with the hour hand in time. Also, students will begin to work with adding more than two numbers so it should be a challenging week of math! In language arts, students are working with words...using the correct words to match to pictures will only increase your child's confidence!
