I would like to say a big THANK YOU to parents for your contributions for last week...it was awesome to see so much support! I know the children were very excited all week. This week will be a short week with a Inservice Day on Friday so no school on February 24th. There will be a change in Library day (Tuesday) this week so please bring back the library books on Monday or Tuesday morning. There were two permission slips handed out last week...one for Gymnastics and the other for Big Little Science Center. Please get those in as soon as possible. As you know information on your child will be emailed to you by Feb. 24th if you don't get the information please email me. As we continue to steamroll through Februay it seems that spring is just around the corner. This week will see our class celebrate two items...(Feb.14) Valentine's Day...and (Feb.15) 100 Day. I sent out an email asking parents to sign up for the goodies. The sign up sheet will be up in the classroom on Monday. If you are unable to sign up please email me so I can let you know what you can bring. Valentine’s Day We will be having a low key Valentine’s Day in class this year. Students are encouraged to give Valentine’s to each other, but please ensure that your child gives a Valentine to EVERY STUDENT IN THE CLASS. We have 24 students in our class. If you still need a class list let me know. 100 Day- I would like to have students bring in items that represent 100 day...such as 100 pennies...100 stickers on paper...100 macaronis glued on a poster, etc. Be creative! Then students can share in the classroom of what they created at home. Treats for this day will be on the sign up sheet! This celebration will take place after recess until 12:20...should be fun! Okay...that is the first part of the week! We will be going to the Young People concert, and our last skating session on Thursday. I will have two permission slips coming out this week. One field trip will be for Gymnastic sessions at T.C.C.(Cost is $8.00 if parents can drive...if we take a bus it will be $17.00 so we will need drivers!). Also, I have booked a visit to Big Little Science Center (March 6) and I will need drivers for this field trip. Let's take a look at this week: Monday, Feb.13 - P.E. Well we are going into the second week of February...and it looks like another busy week for students! The "cold bug" has hit our school, so I will be reminding students to wash hands even more so...hopefully this will keep our class healthy. In Math, we are going to learn about "time" so students will gain knowledge of how to tell time...(very important to know when to have snack!), and we will continue with addition and subtraction. In Science, we are continuing with Force and Motion...and a field trip to the Big Little Science Center to wrap up the unit (details on field trip should be coming out soon). Social Studies we are learning about mapping...and students have created maps on their bedrooms and our classroom. Language Arts will see our Fairy Tale unit continue...students are learning about different parts of the stories. I sent out an email concerning empty kleenex boxes...I thought I had a few but I don't...so if you have empty boxes we really do need them (24 boxes!). Welcome to February! Your right February has come fast...now if everything works out... hopefully the weather will just get better and better..... We are still working away on our Science (Force and Motion) and I would like to go to the Big Little Science Center by the end of February (or early March). We have expanded sentences from one to three in our journals. I will have new sight words for students to work on and of course Home Reading will continue. Fill in your calendar for: End of Year Field Trips We have two full day field trips scheduled for the end of the year. On Wednesday, June 6th, we will be going to the Wildlife Park. Siblings are allowed on this field trip. We will be taking the bus, but we will need a number of parents to join us for the day. On Wednesday, June 13th, we are going to Isobel Lake on the bus. We will need some adventurous volunteers to join us for the day (as many as we can get). Due to the nature of this field trip, NO SIBLINGS are allowed. I will be sending out permission slips for Gymnastic sessions at T.C.C. However before that happens I am still waiting on the cost of both transportation and Gymnastic sessions. Once that is in order permission slips will be issued. Upcoming Events... The last full week of January and we have officially hit the halfway mark...if you were wondering....we are halfway through the school year at the end of Jan. Time sure goes by when your having fun! Well this week is "Literacy week" and students will be reading everyday. We have an anacronym called "DEAR"...drop everything and read. There will be a notice going out Monday about what we will be doing later in the week (dressing up as a character...we will recite a poem to Mrs. Latta's class as well as Mrs. Sarrasin's class). They are also going to share with our class. I know this is a week away but we do have skating on January 30th...leaving the school at 12:45 hopefully we can get the skates/helmuts/snowpants in either the Friday before the Monday (or Monday morning). I don't want to leave anyone in a panic...on the day!! This week we have new sight words...please continue practicing I do see improvements with students so keep up the great job!! As we continue to steamroll through January it seems as though winter is making an appearance. We've had some colder weather and some snow here and there but.......February is coming fast! This week there is a forecast for a couple of really cold days and snowfall (I think Monday and Wednesday...BOOTS and Indoor shoes!). In Science we will wrapping up one unit and starting Force and Motion unit later in the week. Math will see us continue working in the Jumpmath booklet (subtraction). In Language Arts we will continue with the Fairy Tales unit...maybe I will stop writing about this until we start a new unit...new sight words will be out Monday as well as Home Reading will continue. You probably saw the permission slip for skating...dates changed so I need you to sign and return as soon as possible. We are starting a unit in Language Arts that involves stories from Fairy Tales. Students will learn about different parts of the story for example: the setting, plot, and characters. In math we are continuing with subtraction and we will also review addition. In Science we will continue with habitat of animals...in Social Studies we are learning about "Communication" through body language. In P.E. we will continue playing games that require "team-work" and build individual fitness and skills. This week will also see us going to the Sagebrush for Young People's Concert (YPC). We are going skating on January 30th, I have sent out the permission notices which are due back January 12th. Please note that I did not include snowpants in the notice so if your child can bring snowpants for skating that would be great...again if any parents would like to help out, please check the box on the permission slip. I do need one parent to drive the skates & helmets and bags to the arena. There are a few skates at the school however, we will have to search for the right size for students who don't have skates. I still have a few students who do not have running shoes for P.E. please ensure that students have indoor shoes. Activities for this week: Monday, Jan. 9 - P.E. (running shoes needed!) Welcome to 2012! I hope everyone had a great break and enjoyed their time with family and friends over the winter break. Although its nice to have time to relax we must now get back into our routines and schedules... so this week we will begin with new sight words and continue with our Home reading program. In math we will continue to develop an understanding of the "subtraction" concept as well as counting by 2's, 5's, 10's and counting backwards from 100. In Science we will be learning about animals' needs such as shelter and food. Well we are going into our last week before the break...students are working hard and are very excited around this time! As you know our class along with other primary classes are singing at the Overlander Senior home on Thursday. We will be leaving the school at 1 p.m. and arriving back before final school bell. This week students will get new sight words, and Home Reading will continue until Thursday. The Gingerbread trees and houses have been ordered and should arrive on Monday or Tuesday. Wednesday after recess will be the time we will decorate the items...if students bring a bag of goodies please remember that we have nut allergies in our class (so NO nuts at all!). Well this week will be very busy with our class doing the Christmas activity on December 7th(at 1:30 p.m. in the gym), and we are continuing with primary choir practice. The students are getting new sight words this week so please continue practicing the words! I have sent out permission forms to get signed and return as soon as possible. This of course is so students are able to leave the school ground and walk to the Overlander Senior home(December 15 leaving school at 1p.m.). If you would like to help out please indicate on the permission form. A notice went out on Friday to see if there would be interest in purchasing a gingerbread house or gingerbread trees. Please mark down what you would like your child to have...then I can order the items....students would be able to bring bulk candy for the decorations next week.
